An ovarian cyst is a sac or pouch that grows in or on the ovary. The cysts may contain liquid or solid material or a combination of both.Ovarian cysts is very common, particularly in women between the ages of 30 and 60. They may be single or multiple, and can occur in one or both ovaries.
Normally, an ovarian cyst doesn't show any symptoms. The cyst could grow and disappear without detection. Ovarian cyst pain may occur if the cyst twists, or forces, the fallopian tube to contort. Ovarian cyst pain also develops if the cyst bleeds, ruptures or presses against other tissue.
In addition to ovarian cyst pain, ovarian cyst symptoms can include:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Bloating and swelling
- Irregular menstruation
- Pain while bowel movement
- Pain while intercourse.

The laparoscopic surgery, your surgeon will use the laparoscope to remove your cyst from your ovary. He will take the cyst out through the cut in your abdomen or through your vagina. He may also remove part or your entire ovary. Your caregiver may close your ovary with stitches or leave it open to heal on its own. He will send your cyst and a sample of any tissues he removed to the lab for testing.
After a laparoscopy, you can continue normal activities within a day. But you should avoid exhausting activity or exercise for about a week.

- Anaesthetic complications
- Bleeding, may need blood transfusion
- Injury to neighbouring organs especially the bladder, ureters and bowels, may require repair
- Pelvic infection
- Wound complications including infection and hernia (lower incidence)
